Changing Your Furnace Filter

It’s 5 o’clock, dinner is cooking, the air is turned down, the tea is freshly made, the dishwasher unloaded, the clothes are washing, and my home is filled with the sweet aroma of a vanilla Old Yankee candle.  The show that I’m currently binge-watching, Gossip Girl, is playing on the TV.  My husband is finishing up at work and should call me to let me know that he’s headed home any minute now. As I wait for the oven to ding to let me know dinner is done, I do what I love to do... Take a break and watch my show.

As I sit down in my over-sized chair and prop my feet up on the ottoman, the show is more interesting than ever.  Dan, Serena, Blair, Rufus, Lilly, and Scott… all the emotion in this one episode! I’m hooked and I can’t stop...  I just have to finish the rest of this episode before checking the on dinner.  I was so wrapped up in what was happening on Gossip Girl I almost didn’t hear my husband calling my phone. “Hey baby, just wanted to let you know that I will be home within the hour, I love you, see you soon,” he said.  As I hang up with him I smell the delicious BBQ chicken that should be done in the next 10 minutes or so.  I’ve got to finish at least half of the next episode before dinner is ready! That’s right, let’s click play.

As I’m watching the SEASON FINALE, you know, the one episode that CANNOT be interrupted… my thoughts are going everywhere.  One minute I hate this character, and the next, I love them all over again.  The episode is almost over when I realize my husband should be walking through the door any minute and there is a God-awful smell coming from the kitchen.  What is that?!?! I run into the kitchen and there is smoke boiling out of the oven.  I open the oven door and my chicken was burnt to a crisp, my carrots were black blobs, and my potatoes looked like pebbles!  As I’m freaking out, the smoke detector decides that it’s ready to tell the world I burned the dinner, like I didn’t feel bad enough already.  I lifted the windows, turned on all the fans, and opened the front door and here comes my husband right up the steps and into the house.  I can only imagine what he’s about to say about the smoke and smell.  Instead of saying anything he looks at me, laughs, and wraps me in a big hug with a sweet kiss on the forehead and tells me that everything will be okay, Pizza Hut is only three minutes down the road.  I couldn’t help but laugh and thank him for not being upset that I ruined his dinner.

As I wait for the pans to cool and the smoke to clear, he leaves to go pick up dinner, and I remembered that I haven’t changed my filter in a couple of months.  It’s probably black from tonight’s chicken, so I run to the closet where my filter is located and I pull it out to find it’s filled with dust, so I crumpled it up and tossed it on the floor to throw away.  As I’m searching for a new Accumulair filter I see the box and it’s empty.  NO!!  That can’t be, how can I be out?  Not only do I use an uncommon sized filter that can’t be found in stores, but I also don’t use fiberglass filters because they don’t remove any kind of allergens, bacteria or anything else from the air in my home.  That’s why I always get my filters from AirFilters.com.  I should have signed up with their customer service for automatic reoccurring orders so I’d have them when I needed them.  Since I don’t have a new filter, and I completely crumbled the old one, we have no choice but to turn the AC off so that it doesn’t run without a filter.  My husband was not going to be happy about this one… We might be hot, but it isn’t worth damaging our coils and ducts.

I went to AirFilters.com and ordered 4 new replacement filters in the exact size that I needed without a hassle (they do custom sizes as well).  It shipped within 24 hours and their customer service was awesome, plus free shipping over $99. My husband got home with the pizza; I went ahead and let him know the situation I had gotten us in.  After laughing at me again, even harder this time, he told me that it would all be okay and we’re just making memories.

After going two nights without running the AC, my filters came in and I was able to resume life knowing that allergens and bacteria are being filtered from my home every second of the day.  The moral of the story is: Don’t get side tracked from cooking to watch a show full of gossip because you just might end up sleeping without an AC for a couple of nights, better yet, just change your filter every 2-3 months and make sure you always have backup!
