Whole House Filters
The Carrier® Media Filters are filters designed to filter the whole house. They do this by attaching to the HVAC system and filter air as it is pulled through the system. With indoor air pollution being such a big problem, this can be a great solution for cleaning the air. When air quality is particularly poor, air pollutants hanging in the air can trigger allergies and asthma and can even lead to other health problems. For this reason, it is better to have a whole house filter that removes allergens.
Electrostatic Filtration
These filters are offered as either electrostatic or carbon filtration. Electrostatic filtration is a step up from regular HVAC fiberglass filters. Electrostatic filters are made of an electrostatically charged filter media and work similarly to a magnet; as particulates are drawn through the filter, they are attracted to the oppositely charged filter media. This is a highly efficient form of filtration that works much more efficiently than ordinary filters. These filters remove allergens like dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, pollen, and bacteria.
These filters are rated by MERV. MERV is the minimum efficiency reporting value, which is the scale designed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to rate the effectiveness of air filters. The higher MERV rating indicates higher filtering performance. The Carrier® Media Filters are available as MERV 8, MERV 11, or MERV 13. Each of these provides superior residential filtration, removing allergens and bacteria (the MERV 13 removes some viruses).
Carbon Filtration
The Carrier® Media Filters are also available as the Carbon Odor Block filter. Carbon filtration is used primarily to remove unpleasant odors from the air. Regular particulate filters are unable to remove tiny odor particles, but activated carbon does. Carbon becomes activated when a carbon source, such as coconut shell or charcoal, is treated with oxygen, a process that opens up millions of extremely tiny, highly absorbent pores. This media is able to trap tiny odor particles, some gases, and smoke. This filtration helps reduce common household odors like tobacco odors, cooking odors, garbage odors, musty odors, etc.
Gasketing
These Carrier® Media Filters come with special gasketing. This gasketing, made of a foam-like material, makes the filter fit more snug, allowing less air by-pass. This not only keeps the system more efficient but also means more purified air for the family to enjoy.
These filters remove a lot of particulates, so they can become clogged easily. Therefore, it is important to keep these filters replaced regularly. Depending on the air quality and types of particulates being filtered, these filters generally last up to 6 months.
