Indoor Air Pollution

One of the leading causes of breathing problems like asthma and allergies is indoor air pollution. When too little outdoor air is allowed to circulate indoors, air pollutants begin to accumulate inside. Breathing pollutants like dust, smoke, bacteria, and mold can have drastic effects on breathing, not only triggering breathing problems but also worsening health problems like heart disease.

A way to reduce indoor air pollution is with whole house filtration. Whole house filtration, as opposed to room air purification, uses the HVAC system to filter air throughout the entire house. This works by attaching a filter to the HVAC system and filtering air as it moves through the system. The Totaline® Media Filters are whole house filters that are available as electrostatic or carbon filtration.

Electrostatic or Carbon

Electrostatic Filtration  - Electrostatic filtration is a type of filtration that uses an electrostatically charged filter media to remove airborne particulates. As air passes through the electrostatically charged filter, the oppositely charged particles are attracted to the filter media and trapped there. This is a highly efficient type of filtration and is rated by MERV.

MERV Rating - MERV is the minimum efficiency reporting value, which is the scale designed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to rate the effectiveness of air filters. The higher MERV rating indicates higher filtering performance. The Totaline® Media Filters are available as MERV 8, MERV 11, or MERV 13. The MERV 8 and MERV 11 filters remove particulates like dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, pollen, tobacco smoke, and bacteria; the MERV 13 removes the same particulates, but it also removes some viruses.

Carbon Filtration - Carbon filtration is the other type of filtration available as the Totaline® Media Filters. Most regular particulate filters are unable to trap tiny odor particles. Activated carbon, which is a carbon source (charcoal or coconut shell) treated with oxygen, traps tiny odor particles, smoke, and gaseous vapors in its tiny, highly absorbent pores. This carbon filter is great for reducing common household odors like cooking odors, garbage odors, musty odors, pet odors, etc.

Replacement

Because these filters trap so many particulates, they can become clogged very easily. This wears out the filter and causes inefficiency. These filters should be replaced about every 6 months for optimum performance. This keeps the filters from becoming clogged and allows them to maintain higher efficiency for better air quality. Order today and experience cleaner, fresher air!

Specifications

What is MERV? MERV means Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value which was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioner Engineers, ASHRAE. The higher the MERV rating the more efficient the filter will be at capturing airborne particles. Please check with your HVAC specialist as to what MERV rating is best for your system.

What is the MERV rating of Carbon filters? The main use of the Carbon filter is to remove odors from the air. The filters are made with a carbon impregnated media and are not electrostatically charged. The Carbon filter does not have a MERV rating. If you want to remove odors such as cigarette smoke or cooking fumes then the Carbon filter is perfect for you. If you are wanting the best filtration possible then choose a MERV rated filter, remember the higher the MERV, the best the filtration!

FAQ

What does Aftermarket mean? Aftermarket means the filter is not a name brand filter, or OEM. However, the aftermarket filter is built to the same specifications as the Original, name brand filter. While it might not look exactly like the Original filter, it should fit and work just like the Original. It is a low cost alternative!

What do I do if I ordered the wrong filter? Ordered the wrong filter? No problem! Simply fill out this Return Form and send back the filter. There is no limit on when the return must be processed. For more information see our Return Policy.

Accumulair air filters are chemical free so you never have to worry about the addition of unnecessary chemicals to your air. Furthermore, the Accumulair filter material is designed so that it will not support the development of mold, mildew, bacteria, or other microorganisms in normal use. Accumulair...as essential as the air you breathe!

What is Nominal Size and Actual Size? Nominal Size is the advertised or listed size of a filter. This is usually printed on the filter and a whole number, like 20x25x6. However, most of the time the filter will measure something different, the Actual Size. Actual Size is the true, measured size of a filter. If it is printed on the filter is will be in parenthesis or in smaller font. The Actual Size is typically a fraction like 19 ¾ x 24 ¼ x 6 3/8. ***When purchasing a filter, be sure you are getting the correct Actual Size. Often times there is more than one actual size to nominal size.***
