What causes indoor air pollution, and why is it such a problem? With today’s economy, every effort is made to reduce energy costs. What is whole house filtration?

Just as the name suggests, whole house filtration involves filtering air flowing throughout the entire house. Whole house filters, also known as furnace filters, work by attaching to the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system. As air flows through the system, it passes through the filter, which traps harmful air particulates, allowing for redistribution of clean, pure air throughout the entire house.

Why whole house filtration?

Though there are other methods of filtration, whole house filtration filters the entire house, as opposed to just room air purification, which filters only air in one room. Whole house filtration, however, is a way to have cleaner air no matter which room. Types of Whole House Filters

Particulate Filters

Particulate filters, also known as fiberglass filters or washable filters, are regular household filters. This is the type of filter that comes to mind when most people think of filters. Particulate filters protect the HVAC system from damage from large particulates in the air. However, they are not very efficient, and although they do remove large particulates like dust bunnies, lint, and hair, these filters do not purify the air of allergens or other harmful pollutants.

Electrostatic Filters

Electrostatic filters are highly efficient filters that provide much more efficient filtration than regular particulate filters. Electrostatic filters are constructed of a special filter media that is electrostatically charged. As air flows through the HVAC system, it passes through the filter. The electrostatically charged fibers attract the oppositely charged air particles like tiny magnets, sending cleaner air back through the system and circulating throughout the house. These filters remove smaller airborne particulates, including allergens, smoke, and large particulates. The only drawback to electrostatic filters is that they perform best when they are new and clean, so frequent replacement (usually 2-4 times a year) is necessary.
