Types Of Hugs And What They Mean

Are you a jumper or a patter? A squeezer or a softy? Or are you just wondering what in the world I’m even talking about? Hugs! I’m talking about hugs. The type of hugger you are has a lot to do with your personality and your relationship with the hug-gee.

Common Types of Hugs…

That creepy co-worker who always insists on greeting you with a hug…I’m willing to bet they get the Friend-Zone Hug. You know, that awkward hug from the side where you barely touch them. That’s perfect for Scary Harry in the office down the hall. It shows you aren’t trying to be rude, but you aren’t trying to be nice either! The Bear Hug is usually what little kids greet their friends with on the playground or at school. It’s playful, cute and genuine. This is also seen in couples who may have not seen each other lately. Once again, this is a genuine display of affection. When you’re running late for school and your mom just insists she get a hug goodbye, she gets the Quickie Hug. This is a hidden sign of affection. It may not look like much, and you may not think it’s much at the time, but this is an easy way to not make her feel left out or neglected. A quick hug is better than no hug at all! Your boyfriend and you are arguing. He finally realizes everything was his fault, as always, and hugs you in an attempt to reconcile. Do you wrap your arms around him in a loving manner and except his apology? Heck no! You stand there, no expression, arms by your side, and don’t move. You give him the Cold Shoulder Hug. He might as well be hugging a brick wall because he’s not getting any love from you! When you get bad news and tell your friend, what is their first reaction? A Sympathy Hug. Depending on the person, you may get a squeeze around the neck or around the waist. Either way, your head ends up on his/her shoulder. It’s their way of saying "it’s okay, you can cry on my shoulder if you need to". These are the sweetest hugs and definitely the most needed when you’re upset. Am I the only one who has a love/hate relationship with those couples who are always in the honeymoon phase? They’re always happy to see each other, always frolicking with each other, always so darn cute. These couples definitely have the Twirl Hug down to a science. He’ll pick her up and spin her around a little while hugging her. It makes me jealous and happy all at the same time! However, not all couples are so PG. We’ve all seen those raunchy couples at school, at the bar and even at the grocery store who can’t keep their hands off each other. It reminds me of an X-rated version of The Notebook's kiss in the rain scene. This PDA Hug is not something little kids should see. Girls, listen up. It’s only cute to jump in your boyfriend’s arms and hug him if your shorts or skirt is long enough and your hug is not followed by anything dirty- if you know what I mean. And guys, nobody wants to see you grabbing your girl's assets either. Save it for the bedroom!

Reasons for a Hug…

• Greeting • Comfort • Bonding • Affection • Romance • Possession • Protection • Domination

I don’t know about you, but I’m a movie guru. Just for fun, I’ve compiled a list of movies I think have some of the best hugging action. Hope you enjoy!

Movie Hugs:

• The Titanic • I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry • The Great Gatsby • Superbad • Hotel Rwanda • A Midsummer Night’s Dream • The Patriot • Soul Surfer • The Pursuit Of Happiness • The Vow • The Haunting In Connecticut • The Hunger Games • Pretty Woman • A Walk To Remember • The Notebook

A hug can mean anything from ‘ew get away from me’ to ‘I’m in love with you’. You know the meaning behind a hug you give but maybe not always from one you receive. Keep these hugs and their meanings in mind next time you greet someone. If you get a sideways, shy hug, you may not be as close to that person as you thought. But if you literally get swept off your feet, you may hear wedding bells in your future!
